Blurring the lines between literature and living, this “House of Books” designed by Designer Neha Arora N transforms personal narratives into a cohesive, immersive residential experience.

At first glance, the home unfolds like a carefully composed series of spaces — warm, layered, and intuitively designed. But look closer, and a deeper narrative begins to emerge. Conceived as a “House of Books,” the project brings together a multitude of literary inspirations, translating them into a home that is both expressive and deeply livable.

Rather than beginning with a fixed concept, the idea evolved organically through conversations with the homeowner. With a wide spectrum of references — each distinct in mood and character — it became clear that a singular design language would not suffice. What surfaced instead was a unifying thread: literature. This became the foundation for a home where each room draws from a different story, allowing diverse inspirations to coexist within a cohesive spatial framework.

The design consciously avoids literal interpretations. Instead of recreating scenes, the focus shifts to capturing the essence of each narrative — its mood, atmosphere, and emotional tone. Materials, textures, and colour palettes are used as subtle cues, ensuring that the spaces feel refined and timeless rather than theatrical.

This approach is evident in the living room, inspired by Moby Dick. Rooted in personal memory, the space integrates corals collected by the client’s father during his time in the navy. These elements inform a rustic, sea-inspired environment, where storytelling is layered through materiality rather than overt symbolism. In contrast, the TV room draws from Harry Potter, combining stone-finish walls with a gallery of antique-style frames and digital displays — offering a contemporary reinterpretation of the iconic moving portrait wall.

Despite the diversity of narratives, the home maintains a strong sense of cohesion. A consistent base palette of soft off-whites, warm browns, and earthy finishes — accented with black and gold — anchors the design. Within this framework, each room develops its own identity through variations in proportion, texture, and detailing, allowing the spaces to feel distinct yet interconnected.

Movement through the home remains intuitive rather than sequential. Each space aligns naturally with its function and the client’s preferences — from a Victorian-inspired kitchen to a Jane Austen-influenced bedroom, a layered interpretation of The Count of Monte Cristo in the master suite, and a Beauty and the Beast-inspired library. Extending the narrative outdoors, the garden and dining area take cues from a Lord of the Rings-style tavern setting, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior storytelling.

One of the most evocative spaces is the Jane Austen-inspired room, where muted olive greens and warm neutrals create a soft, enveloping palette. Vintage furniture with curved profiles, carved detailing, and subtle metallic accents introduce a sense of old-world refinement. Light plays a defining role here — diffused daylight filters through sheer drapes, while warm artificial lighting enhances the room’s intimate, almost romantic atmosphere. The overall composition balances symmetry and softness, resulting in a space that feels elegant yet comfortably contemporary.

Designing a narrative-driven home of this nature came with its challenges. Bringing together varied stories without overwhelming the senses required a disciplined approach to materiality and detailing. By anchoring the design in a consistent visual language, the project achieves a balance between individuality and cohesion, ensuring that the storytelling remains subtle and sophisticated.

Interestingly, the narrative reveals itself almost instantly. Even first-time visitors, without prior context, find themselves intuitively reading the spaces — recognising the inspirations embedded within each room. Yet, the home continues to unfold over time, offering new layers of discovery with every experience.

Ultimately, the “House of Books” exists at the intersection of personalised living and narrative design. It reflects the homeowner’s memories and emotional connections, while also demonstrating how storytelling can shape contemporary interiors. Here, design becomes more than an aesthetic exercise — it becomes a medium through which stories are lived, experienced, and continuously rediscovered.
