Step inside Cafe De Leila in Lucknow, and it’s immediately clear that the greenery isn’t just an afterthought—it’s the main event. Spanning 5,000 square feet, this project by Aatika Manzar Designs (led by Aatika Manzar herself) blurs the lines between architecture, interior design, and landscape. Instead of just dropping a few potted plants in the corner, the design weaves nature, natural light, and raw materials into one seamless experience.
The first thing that grabs you is the glass facade. It’s expansive, pulling in floods of daylight and keeping the indoors visually tethered to the lush landscape outside. Because the layout is semi-open, the surrounding mature trees actually become part of the decor. As the sun moves across the sky, shifting shadows play across the floor, giving the cafe a completely different mood from morning coffee to evening drinks.
Walk inside, and the textures really start to sing. Aatika’s team mixed exposed brick and flex stone with rich, textured wood paneling and patterned floors. They layered in woven finishes and plush upholstery, striking that tricky balance between raw and refined. It feels incredibly warm and inviting, completely dodging that stiff, overly-designed look you sometimes get in modern cafes.
Nature doesn’t stop at the walls, either. A striking vertical green wall spills over the interior, softening up the sharp geometric lines of the room. Step outside, and you’ll find the al fresco seating tucked right beneath the canopy of those mature trees. It’s a quieter, more grounded spot to grab a bite, making the cafe feel like a natural extension of the neighborhood.
The lighting completely transforms the space when the sun goes down. Daylight is all about highlighting the rich textures of the walls and floors. But at night, warm pendant lights dangle down from the foliage, creating these little pockets of intimacy. Add in some soft ambient lighting, and the whole place gets a cozy, layered depth.
The furniture keeps that same relaxed, earthy energy. You’ve got curved wicker chairs that soften the room’s angles, topped with tropical-toned cushions that pop against the neutral, textured background. Everything is tied together with natural woven elements that keep you connected to the outdoors.
Layout-wise, the space is wonderfully fluid. There are no rigid barriers between the inside and outside, which means the cafe can easily adapt. It’s just as perfect for a quiet, intimate catch-up as it is for a loud, lively group hangout, all without losing its underlying sense of comfort.
Ultimately, Cafe De Leila is a great example of Aatika Manzar Design Studio’s philosophy: spaces should do more than just serve their basic function; they should make you feel something. By letting natural light, tactile materials, and lush greenery dictate the flow, they’ve created a spot where the architecture doesn’t try to outshine nature. Instead, it just steps back and lets the trees, the light, and the materials do the talking.
